Running a chess club full of students can be a tricky task — but one player took on the challenge back in 2016. Donovan Sipho, then a student at the university, stepped up to form a team and enter it into the league for the first time in many years.

Working closely with the league, Donovan put in a tremendous amount of effort as team captain. He organized matches and coordinated venues — no small feat considering the university lacked players with cars, and many students were unavailable during holidays or exam periods. Even after graduating, Donovan continued his commitment to local chess. He took the lead in starting a new club based at Noah's Yard pub in Sketty, where a casual and lively chess scene has flourished. Players regularly drop in for a drink and a game, making it possibly one of the largest and most dynamic clubs in the area.

Donovan went on to manage two teams: Noah's Yard A and Noah's Yard B. Despite the usual student-related challenges — late joiners, exams, and transport issues — both teams remain active and competitive. They have taken titles in the knockouts and placed themselves at high positions in the league. This year Noah’s Yard B even promoted to the first division.

In the past year, Donovan took on the demanding role of League Secretary — one of the most time-consuming positions in the organization. This role involves coordinating trophies, taking minutes, attending committee meetings, and generally keeping the league running smoothly — all while continuing as captain of Noah’s Yard A and lead organiser for the club.

Thanks to Donovan’s efforts, the league now includes six active clubs — with Noah's Yard being the most recent and crucial addition to keep league numbers strong. Beyond organizing teams, Donovan also created a bi-monthly league journal, which has not only informed members but also helped secure vital funding. If you’d like a copy of the journal, just ask — Donovan’s always happy to provide. It doesn't look like he’ll be stepping away from his Secretary duties anytime soon, and the league owes a great deal to this dedicated former student who continues to take his love for the game to the next level.
