Addendum

Just after this was written two of the three semi finals were played.

Morriston E beat De la Beche D 3-1 in the section for the A.D. Nicholson Shield, while De la Beche A beat Morriston A by the same score in the Open section for the Stanley Fortt Memorial Cup. Only the White Knights C v Morriston D semi-final in the section for the Richard E Jones Cup remains unplayed.

Richard E Jones Cup The last of the quarter finals in the Richard E Jones Knockout Tournament for players graded 1800 or under was played at Morriston on the 1st April. It was between Morriston C and White Knights B and it was won decisively by the Knights 3-1. Draws on the top two boards but wins on the bottom two for the Knights. The number of entrants in this section has meant that at each stage at least one team has had a bye and this was the first match in the competition for White Knights B while Morriston C had progressed to this stage by winning against De la Beche B (after bottom board elimination).

White Knights have a second team in this section of the competition but they are having a more intense time. In their first round match White Knights C scrapped through thanks to bottom board elimination after drawing with De la Beche B. In the quarter final they defeated Castell-Nedd Senators (3-1).

Morriston D have progressed to the semi finals after a first round bye and a quarter final win over BF Brunel (2½-1½).

The draw for the semi-finals was made after this match and White Knights B have found themselves gaining yet another bye and going straight through to the final. They will be joined there by either White Knights C or Morriston D with the prospect of an all White Knights final.

Final: White Knights B v White Knights C or Morriston D

A.D. Nicholson Shield With seven entries for the A.D. Nicholson Shield for players graded 1400 or under there were three quarter final matches and one team got a bye. De la Beche C drew with Morriston F but progressed into the semi-finals after bottom board elimination and it was a similar story in the drawn match between Morriston E and Castell-Nedd Tribunes with Morriston E progressing. Only the St Michael’s School v Upper Killay Harriers produced a definitive result with St Michael’s winning 2½-1½. The semi finals paired St Michael’s School against De la Beche C while De la Beche D (who had the bye) were paired with Morriston E. The first semi final has already been played and yet again resulted in a draw. After bottom board elimination St Michael’s now find themselves in the final where they will play either De la Beche D or Morriston E.

Final: St Michael's School v De la Beche D or Morriston E Stanley Fortt Memorial Cup

Although this is arguably the most prestigious section which can accommodate players of any strength only five teams entered. This meant that that one team (Morriston A) got a bye into the “quarter -finals”. In the other two quarter final matches De la Beche A triumphed over Nidum 3-1 while White Knights A overwhelmed CN Emperors 4-0. With three teams going into the semi-finals White Knights A find themselves with a bye into the final while De la Beche A and Morriston A get to fight it out to see who joins them.

Final: White Knights A v De la Beche A or Morriston A

All the finals are scheduled to be played on Monday 13th May at the Morriston Chess Club so all the three remaining semi finals will need to be played before then.
