The league competition ends
Last week saw the League competition come to an end with teams going through the motions of fulfilling their fixtures. In Division 1 Morriston A trounced Port Talbot 5-0 and are no doubt looking forward to next season with a view to improving this season's third place finish. In the final Division 1 match White Knights B faced a relatively weak Nidum B and duly won 3-2. In spite of this result White Knights B finished 3 points below fourth placed Nidum B, a considerable reverse on last season when they finished third.
In Division 2 UK Merlins finished with a flourish by defeating Woodman B 4-1 and overtook BF Giants to sixth place. CN Emperors already destined to finish third defeated Woodman A 3.5-1.5.
Only in Division 3 was there anything to play for. BF Ferrymen needed to win against Morriston C to stand any chance of finishing second ahead of Morriston D. The Morriston club, however, had other ideas and put out one of their strongest teams of the season. A bottom board default by Ferrymen did not help their cause and they unsurprisingly went down 3.5-1.5. The final match between UK Hawks and Morriston D resulted in Morriston D cementing their second place with a 3-2 win, in spite of turning up a player short. An interesting statistic regarding Division 3 is that every team defaulted at least 3 games and only top placed Morriston C did not have penalty points deducted !
Attention now focuses on the KO Cup competition and the finals scheduled for Monday 12th May. Only four teams entered the Open section (Stan Fortt Cup) and last week started with Nidum unable to field a team in their semi-final match against White Knights. The final will, therefore, feature White Knights against Briton Ferry.
Seven teams entered the Under 1800 section (Richard E Jones Cup) and this also suffered from teams dropping out. However, last week's semi-final saw Port Talbot defeat White Knights 2.5-1.5 and go into the final against CN Emperors.
The Under 1500 section (A.D. Nicholson Shield) had 9 entries. The semi-final played yesterday (7th May) resulted in White Knights beating UK Eagles 4-0 and thereby stopping an all Upper Killay final. White Knights now face UK Hawks in the final.
Five of our eight clubs will be represented on Monday. White Knights in both the Open and Under 1500 section; Briton Ferry in the Open; Castell Nedd and Port Talbot in the Under 1800 and Upper Killay in the Under 1500. The event will take place at the Morriston club.
