After being cut short in 2020 due to the Covid outbreak the West Wales Closed Championship is being resurrected. It is open only to members of the West Wales Chess League.

As in previous years the Championship is being organised as a 5-round Swiss Tournament on 5 separate evenings. Premises have been booked to work around bank holidays, club AGMs and rugby matches. As the matches are being held in licensed premises only refreshments purchased on the premises can be consumed. Time limit 1:15 hours + 10 secs per move. The first round draw will be done on the night just before the start of round 1. If possible your entry should be in before this as last minute entries can give the controller something of a headache. Make sure you are there well before the start time. Players may claim a ½ point bye in any of the first four rounds provided it is requested with entry. The last round may be delayed.

The tournament will be controlled by Ian Eustis and Bill Hewitt.

The entry fee is £5 payable by cash on the first night or, if you prefer, by bank transfer to the bank account of the West Wales Chess League. Please fill in the reference as below.

All fees will go toward the prize money with the League topping up the entry fees by £70 (as in previous years). In 2019 there were 26 entries and the prize fund was £200 . So the more the merrier! There will be 1st and 2nd place plus 4 grading prizes.

The winner holds the E.J. Clarke Trophy for a year. The current holder is Ian Jones but unfortunately due to illness he is unable to defend his title. We wish him well and a speedy recovery.
