White Knights dominate in the KO cup
The KO Cup Finals, held on Monday 12th May at the Coopers Arms in Plasmarl, produced no real surprises with the victories going to the stronger teams.
In the Open section White Knights, having progressed to the final without playing a match, put out their strongest team against a comparatively weak Briton Ferry team. An average grade of 2116 vs 1493 was only going to end one way and White Knights duly walked away 4-0 winners. They take possession of the Stanley Fortt Memorial Cup which they last won in 2010.
The Major section for the Richard E Jones Trophy was hard fought and in spite of Port Talbot outgrading Castell-Nedd Emperors the match could have gone either way. At the end of the day, however, Port Talbot triumphed 3-1 and a new name goes onto the trophy.
The battle for the A.D. Nicholson Shield between Upper Killay Hawks and White Knights in the Minor Section should have been one way traffic, especially when Upper Killay Hawks turned up a player short. In the event an unfortunate blunder by the White Knights' board 1 meant that the result hinged on the board 3 result where a win for Upper Killay would have seen them take the Shield. In the event, and somewhat to the surprise of White Knights, a draw was agreed and White Knights won this section 2½ -1½.
