White Knights' Success

The Final of the WCU KO Cup Open section held in Dowlais on the 23 June saw a repeat of last year with our top two teams, Nidum and White Knights, battling it out yet again. Both teams saw off strong opposition to get there and on the day there was no doubt that with a grading advantage on three out of four boards Nidum were the favourites. However, excellent wins by David Buttell and Keith Downey ensured that White Knights retained the Trophy that they won last year and went home victorious.

This win comes on top of White Knights' success in the Welsh Chess Premier League where they won more matches than any of the other teams and came second only because of a lower game point total. White Knights now head off to Rhodes in October to compete in the European Club Championships and we wish them every success. It is also worth pointing out that our League Champions Nidum came third with just one less match point than the top two teams but interestingly with more game points than any other team.

The only other WWCL club present on Finals day was Morriston who took part in the Under 1800 Plate final. Thanks to the intricacies of the competition they once again faced Cardiff - having already defeated them in the Preliminary round. This time, however, Morriston faced a much changed and stronger Cardiff team and their success was not repeated - a good day for Cardiff who not only won the Under 1800 Plate but also the Open Plate and the Under 1500 Cup.
