Brunel Win A.D. Nicholson Shield
Originally scheduled for the 15th May at the Morriston Chess Club the final of the Under 1400 KO Competition for the A.D. Nicholson Shield between Briton Ferry Brunel and De la Beche B was brought forward to the 10th May and played at the De la Beche club in Sketty.
Division 3 winners Brunel had progressed to the final by beating both Morriston D and Castell-Nedd Tribunes by an impressive 4-0 on each occasion while De la Beche B had perhaps a more difficult journey with matches against Morriston C (3-1) and Upper Killay Harriers (2-2 but progressing to the final after bottom board elimination). It was always going to be a difficult match to call and could have gone either way. A draw between Ken Huntley and Carl Halpin coupled with wins for Paul Bevan over Jonathan Davies and Colin Chambers over Clive Gosling kept the match evenly poised and it all came down to the game between Lyndon Todd and Derek Bellamy, a game that Lyndon eventually won.
Ken Huntley 0.5 0.5 Carl Halpin
Paul Bevan 1 0 Jonathan Davies
Derek Bellamy 0 1 Lyndon Todd
Clive Gosling 0 1 Colin Chambers
So 2½-1½ in favour of the Briton Ferry team and all in all a good year for the Brunel team. 1 Views - Last updated: 26/08/24
