The oldest constituent unit of the Welsh Chess Union — founded in a Swansea YMCA meeting room in 1932, and heading for its centenary.

Founded at the Swansea YMCA
With Stan Cole in the chair, six clubs — Swansea, Upper Forrest Welfare, the YMCA "Rooks", St Joseph's, Cwmfelin and Gorseinon — form the Swansea Chess League. Affiliation: two shillings and sixpence per club.

1933–34
The league takes its present name
Llanelli and Port Talbot are admitted and the league becomes "Swansea and District"; a year later, with Cwmamman's arrival, it takes the name it holds today — the West Wales Chess League. President Dr Hanson presents the Division One trophy still contested every season.

The first Lightning Tournament
The league's fast-chess tradition begins — the one competition that has never carried a benefactor's name.

1957–1960
The low ebb
Just three clubs — Swansea, Neath and Mond — keep the league alive. Some 59 clubs have played in the league across its history; none of the founders survive today.

Today
Eight clubs, three leagues, three cups
From Carmarthen to Neath, the league runs two open divisions, a junior Championship League and three knockout cups — with its centenary in sight in 2032.
