AO Jones Rapidplay: Alan Young Claims the Trophy at Morriston
The 2026 AO Jones Rapidplay took place on Sunday, 31 May at Morriston Rugby Club, welcoming 30 players for a day of fast-paced and competitive chess.
Played in the rapid format, the tournament created an exciting atmosphere from the opening round onwards. Throughout the day, the room was filled with concentration, the steady rhythm of chess clocks and players deeply engaged at the board.
At the end of an entertaining tournament, Alan Young emerged as the clear overall winner. His excellent performance earned him the AO Jones Trophy, awarded to the highest-placed player from the West Wales Chess League.
The grading prizes were shared among the qualifying players, reflecting the competitive nature of the event across the field.
Away from the boards, players were able to enjoy a buffet funded by the West Wales Chess League, providing a chance to relax, discuss games and enjoy the social side of the event between rounds.
The tournament was overseen by Chief Arbiter Bill Hewitt, assisted by Ed Warner, whose efforts helped ensure the day ran smoothly.
Once again, the AO Jones Rapidplay proved to be a successful and enjoyable event, bringing together players from across the region for an excellent day of competitive chess and good company.
