And this month I’d like to thank a contributor to both the West Wales league and the Welsh Chess Union. Captain of the Banshees in Morriston Chess Club, Ian Eustis has been a cornerstone of the Welsh chess community for over 40 years, contributing tirelessly to the development of players and the smooth running of tournaments. Known for his dedication to both adult and junior chess, Ian has made an incredible impact as a coach, organizer, and mentor.

His contributions have included acting as Junior Director on the Welsh Chess Union (WCU) Board and managing the junior teams in matches across the UK. This year, as with many before, he managed the Welsh juniors, competing in matches such as the U18 versus Sussex held in Usk. In the newly launched Dragon League Ian played an important coaching role, supporting two junior teams — St Joseph's and Clydach. He helped coach these teams, brought them along to the matches, and offered encouragement and advice throughout.

Ian’s involvement doesn't end with the Dragon League. He has consistently given "sterling service" in events such as the West Wales League Lightning Tournament and the West Wales Junior, helping ensure the success of these competitions. Only this month he aided the smooth running of the Pembrokeshire Junior Chess Tournament with 40 participants from 19 different schools.

Earlier in 2024, Ian officially stepped down from the major role of chairman after serving over four decades. His work has left "big shoes to fill," as acknowledged by the new chairman.

Even though Ian has stepped back from some official duties, his influence remains strongly felt — in juniors finding their confidence over the board, making sure tournaments run smoothly, and contributing to the WWCL executive committee. His decades of passion, patience, and service have not only helped chess grow in Wales but have also built a true community spirit that continues to thrive.

Know anyone who deserves a volunteer of the month? There are some who contribute tirelessly to our league, in particular those who work hard outside of clubs whether grading officer, website designer, or committee member and these are the players who should be recognised. If you have a name, give me a shout.
