Brunel Clinch Division 3
This Easter week there were two rearranged matches in Division 1 involving White Knights B playing Morriston A and White Knights C playing University A. The full strength Morriston team were, perhaps surprisingly, held to a draw by the Knights with two over the board wins each and a draw on board 2. However, White Knights C were even more successful when they won the three bottom boards against the University and drew board 2 and so took the victory 3½-1½. These two results mean that White Knights C is yet again above their B team in the table.
Just two matches in Division 2 with leaders Morriston B in action against third placed White Knights D and De la Beche B hosting Upper Killay Merlins. The Morriston v Knights match was a tight affair and with 4 draws over the board it was only settled by a Morriston win on board 2. The 3-2 win extends Morriston B’s lead at the top to 3 points but also means that White Knights D is now no longer a challenger.
The middle of the table clash between De la Beche A and Merlins resulted in an impressive 4-1 win for the Merlins and took them above both De la Beche A and University B in the table so that they now lie fifth on the same points total as Giants.
Division 3 was the busiest of the week with three matches, two them involving Tribunes. First up was Tribunes v St Michael’s School when Tribunes went slightly better than their last encounter and won 3½-1½.
A difficult year for the Hawks continued when they played host to Morriston E but still only managed to field 4 players. They lost 1-4 with the added injury that the default took their total to 14 for the season and increased their penalty points to 10.
The final and crucial match was between BF Brunel and CN Tribunes with Brunel needing a draw to clinch the Division 3 title. As it happened they just managed to steal a 3-2 win so in addition to taking the title they held onto their 100% record. With just two matches to go they are presumably hopeful of making it a clean sweep.
