With the fourth round of the E.J Clarke Closed Championship taking precedence there were just five league matches in the week just gone. There were no matches in Division 1, one in Division 2 and the rest of the action in Division 3.

The one match in Division 2 was between Morriston D and De la Beche University. With the De la Beche team sitting on the lowest tier of the rankings, on the same match points as Brunel but with a lower game point total, they needed a win to overtake Brunel and get out of the relegation zone. Morriston D, however, were not at all sympathetic to their situation and by fielding a marginally stronger team had an impressive 4-1 win. De la Beche University still have a match in hand over Brunel and they have a head to head coming up in two weeks. It could be a relegation decider.

The leaders in Division 3 both missed opportunities to boost their chances of taking the title. Leaders De la Beche B were at home to Morriston F knowing that in their previous encounter they had a straightforward 3½-1½ win. In this return match, however, Morriston fielded a team of up and coming juniors and it paid off. A 3-2 win to Morriston F and De la Beche B’s second loss of the season.

Luckily for De la Beche B their nearest challengers Morriston E suffered the same fate against UK Harriers. The vagrancies of the fixture list somehow resulted in this being the first time this season that the teams have met. Morriston E were the team in form with four wins on the trot while Harriers were coming off the back of a loss and a draw, so Morriston E would no doubt have been hopeful of getting a positive result. In what was presumably a close run affair the Harriers, however, came out on top, 3-2. It ruined Morriston E’s opportunity to reduce the gap with De la Beche B who hold onto what is now looking like a fragile 3 point lead.

On Tuesday CN Tribunes welcomed visitors Morriston G. Both teams fielded a number of juniors but their relative playing strengths favoured the Tribunes and it showed in the result which was an impressive 5-0 victory for the Tribunes – their second win of the month.

The final match in Division 3 did not, in fact, take place. It should have been between Morriston F and St Michael’s School but St Michael’s defaulted allowing Morriston F a walkover. This is the second match that St Michael’s have defaulted.
