Happy 90th Birthday, David Merryweather
A little while ago, it was brought to my attention that one of our longest-serving members has reached the grand age of 90. On behalf of everyone, we would like to wish David Merryweather a very happy birthday.
I knew David well through the Castell Nedd Chess Club, where he was a respected and dedicated member. He was also one of the club's strongest players, reaching a rating of 1665 in 2001, placing him among the club's top 50 players of all time. David joined Castell Nedd Chess Club in 1999, and his value to the club was quickly recognised when he was named Clubman of the Year in 2002. He possessed a remarkable memory and a deep understanding of the game. I remember him telling my father that much of his chess knowledge had been developed through solving chess problems when he was younger.
Always a tough and determined competitor, David knew his chess well and was never an easy opponent. He was a combative player who regularly represented Neath on the higher boards and later played on the top boards for Briton Ferry.
As well as being a valued member and secretary of Castell Nedd Chess Club, he played an important role in expanding opportunities for chess across the region. David's contribution to chess in the area extended far beyond his own playing career. In the late 1990s, he established a club at the Port Talbot YMCA, bringing a new club into the West Wales Chess League. In 2004, David helped establish a club in Briton Ferry and successfully ran it for many years. The Briton Ferry Chess Club met at the Conservative Club and became an important part of the West Wales Chess League until it merged with Nidum in 2015. Sadly, the merged club closed a few years later. His commitment to the game continues to this day through his role as a Vice-President of the West Wales Chess League.
David's dedication, enthusiasm, and contribution to chess have left a lasting mark on the local chess community. His achievements as a player, organiser, administrator, and player are greatly appreciated by all who have known him.
Once again, we wish David Merryweather a very happy 90th birthday and hope he enjoys many more years to come.
