Sadly, another ex-member of the league, Richard Ostrom, passed away in September. Formerly serving in the Neath Metal Box and Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes, Richard played for the long standing and very successful Nidum chess club in Neath that ran from 1992 to 2015 winning the division one trophy from 1992 to 2009 and 2010-13 (even winning in 2017 when they combined with Briton Ferry chess club).
Although he only played in the 90s, Richard was Honourable Secretary of Nidum for many years, giving up his time to help the club run in the late 90s and early 21st century. He attended twin town affairs in Italy, Germany and the Netherlands - quite the traveller! One of his most funniest moments (or maybe mischievous) was playing Ne4 to c2 to fork a rook and queen when playing Janet Evans. Obviously an accident.
Such members are essential to the league and its clubs, and without these voluntary organisers chess could not continue. We wish our condolences to his friends and family, and thank him for everything he did.
