League season over

In the final two weeks of the season all teams completed their fixtures without too many surprises. Morriston A whitewashed a weak Brunel side to ensure that they finished the season undefeated and 5 points ahead of rivals White Knights A who went down 3½-1½ to Nidum in their final match of the season. Interestingly Morriston were behind the Knights on game points before their final matches and needed the win to avoid the embarrassment of winning the title with a lower game point total! Morriston B had a late surge with victories over White Knights C (1½-3½) and Emperors (4½-½) and finish in fifth place - something of a surprise considering their poor start to the season. Nidum cemented third spot with a convincing 4½-½ win over White Knights C.

Division 2 saw Morriston C complete their season with a 4½-½ win over Merlins and so finish 4 points ahead of their nearest rivals Woodman A. White Knights D meanwhile had comfortable wins over UK Hawks (4½-½) and Morriston D (1-4) and although they have a marginally better game point score finish in third place 1 match point behind Woodman A. Other matches saw BF Giants defeat UK Harriers 3½-1½, a result that sees Giants finish in fifth spot ahead of Tribunes who had a mixed end to the season when they lost to White Knights E 3-2, but then went on to defeat Morriston D 3½-1½. The final match of the season was a win for UK Merlins over White Knights E ( 4-1).

Attention now turns to the KO Cup competition with semi-finals due to be played this month and culminating with finals night on the 1st June at the Coopers Arms in Plasmarl (Morriston Chess Club home venue).

There is also news that the Nidum and Briton Ferry clubs will be merging. The word is that the combined club will be entering 4 teams in the League but continue to use their two existing venues.
