Although it was a relatively quiet week in the League there were, nevertheless, a couple of significant results. In the only match played in Division 1 Nidum strengthened their hold on top spot by beating Morriston A (2-3 away). Although it is still early in the season Morriston’s two losses does not bode well for their chances of challenging for the title. Results will need to go their way from now on if it is not to be a two horse race between Nidum and White Knights.

Division 2 saw Morriston C defeat De la Beche A 4-1 and BF Giants beat UK Merlins 3½-1½. BF Bluebell, however, got a bit of a surprise, or should it be shock, when they travelled to Swansea to play the University. For the first time this season the University fielded three players rated over 1600 and pre-match favourites Bluebell found themselves out graded on the top four boards. A 4-1 win to the University and their first match points of the season. This division is starting to look like the most competitive of all three.

In Division 3 the one match that took place was between UK Harriers and De la Beche B. Two wins and two draws was enough for Harriers to win 3-2 and move back into top spot. As things stand it looks like Harriers, Morriston D and Tribunes will all be challenging for the division title.

Round 1 of the West Wales Closed Championship (E.J. Clarke Trophy) takes place this Wednesday 19th October at the Upper Killay Chess Club. The championship is organised as a traveling 5 round Swiss Tournament and only members of the West Wales Chess League are eligible to take part. It costs £5 to enter but all the entry fees are returned as prizes.
