South Wales U12 Junior Chess Squad: New Talent
The West Wales Chess League juniors are now getting ready to play in England, with several of our players taking part and representing the league.
The South Wales Under 12 junior chess squad has consistently demonstrated skill and competitiveness, last year competing at the Chepstow Leisure Centre against Southwest England and South East England. In the former, South Wales were just one point away from victory, scoring 8.5 points to Southwest England's 9.5. Facing Southeast England the team encountered significant challenges. Despite individual victories from players, the team struggled overall, with Southeast England dominating the match.
Looking ahead to the 2024 season, the squad has added promising players from Castell Nedd chess club. Tomos Francis, who has only been playing for a year, scored 4 out of 8 points in the 2023-24 league. Advik Ram, a sharp 9-year-old who joined this year with his 7-year-old brother, defeated the 1800-rated Hywel Griffiths in a club simultaneous. Jacob Wright, also a recent addition, won the club’s U11 competition. All three are competing in the Championship league this year. Their inclusion is expected to enhance the squad’s performance and reflects the growing talent in the West Wales Chess League.
We wish them the best of luck in their upcoming matches!
