The Pergammon Press K.O. Cup began in 1973, later renamed the Stan Fortt Cup, marking the start of a new West Wales closed competition. Over the years, this event has been organised by various individuals, but May’s Player of the Month has stepped up to oversee it multiple times over the years. After a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, restarting the tournament this year posed challenges — yet William Hewitt has once again taken on the role with dedication. His tournament organisation extends beyond this, as he also manages the A.O. Jones Rapidplay annually, adding enjoyment and excitement for club members.

Hewitt’s contributions as an organiser and arbiter are significant. He previously served as League Secretary for the West Wales Chess League and has co-directed important events like the West Wales Closed Championship. In 2023, he became a licensed National Arbiter, further cementing his role in the chess community.

Working with the Welsh Chess Union is no small feat—information can be hard to access, and navigating website updates or meeting attendances can be tedious. Yet Hewitt consistently attends meetings and provides valuable feedback, all while maintaining an active and successful chess career.

William Hewitt is a well-established figure in West Wales chess, known both as a strong player and a committed organiser. For decades, he has competed steadily, representing clubs such as White Knights A in the West Wales Chess League and Rhyfelwyr Essyllwg in national competitions like the 4NCL.

His achievements in regional events include sharing first place at the A.O. Jones Rapidplay in 2020 and a notable performance at the West Wales Chess Congress in 2022, where he tied for second in the Open section. Hewitt qualified for the British Chess Championships in 2016 and has represented Wales internationally, including appearances at the European Team and Club Championships.

Known for his reliability, strong performances, and steady leadership, William Hewitt remains a central and respected figure in the chess community of West Wales.
