Summary of the Welsh Chess Union Meeting – 23rd of November 2025

I attended the Welsh Chess Union meeting on the 23rd and wanted to update everyone on the key points discussed.

A detailed development plan had originally been circulated, but it was considered overly complex. After questions were raised, it has been confirmed that a simplified version is being prepared, though it has not yet been released. I’ve requested a copy so we can review it when it becomes available. It will be interesting to see how the Union intends to move forward and allocate its time toward achieving its goals.

One ongoing issue the Union faces—much like our own league—is a shortage of volunteers. This applies both to small administrative tasks and to larger committee roles. There is still clear interest in investing in the Chess Olympiad team, but I stressed that promoting chess across all levels and more broadly across Wales is equally or more important. However, as was pointed out, such promotional efforts require volunteers, which remains the biggest challenge.

On a positive note, there has been significant growth in chess participation throughout Wales, including West Wales, with rising membership and more events being held. This is encouraging, but the longstanding problem remains: maintaining the infrastructure needed to support this growth. That concern continues to hover in the background and may present future difficulties.

Overall, the meeting was short but covered several interesting points, although there was limited discussion of new plans or initiatives.
