Treasurer

A quiet role, the treasurer has peace most of the time and is mainly busy at the start of the new season. Making sure payments are made, recorded and (should they be late) the right officials are contacted, it is this that makes up most of the job. With the internet easily available, checking payments and making them on time is super simple.

The treasurer is one of the important roles of the league and is part of the executive committee. This means your vote will help make decisions and can shape the league.

  • Taking registration fees before the 31st of October (it is useful to send out reminders for payments to be due by the 1st of September)
  • Contact division controller about penalisations required for late payments
  • Make any relevant payments
  • Pay in any relevant funds
  • Participate in executive committee meetings
  • Create a statement of account

Division Controller

The division controller is a role that can be busy or quiet, depending on the bumps and bruises of the division. Although the controller is administrator of the division, when everything is running fine then there’s little to do! However, a few times a year you may have a dispute arising where a decision must be made, and the rulebook studied. Deal with them quickly and carefully and they can be swept aside easily, but sometimes the dispute can lead to communication between the executive committee, team captain’s and other officials within the league.

If you want a bit of responsibility, but not all the time, this is a role that you could take on. There are no committee meetings (excusing a report at the AGM) and for the most part things run smoothly. However, be prepared to make sure everyone has followed the rules and that sometimes you must make the decisions and get the elbow grease out!

  • Administration of the division rules
  • Give consent to postponements to prevent clashes, over-filling of the calendar, and make sure matches are postponed for reasons described in the yearbook
  • If postponement dates cannot be agreed on, appoint a date
  • Accept disputes from team captains within 21 days of said issue
  • Accept appeals from team captains within 21 days of a decision being made against the division controller’s decision
  • Can annul default points if there are genuine and unforeseen circumstances and it is in the best interests of the league
  • Receive match cards when the website is unavailable
  • Decide on player of the year
  • Give report at the AGM

Delegate to the international director of the WCU

The delegate roles are, for the most part, quiet positions. Some of the more involved roles are taken on by our experienced officers, but if you want to interact with the WCU and peek into the life of chess in Wales this may be one way to go about it.

There are rumours of an overhaul of the WCU structure now, so it may be an interesting time to interact with them. If you’d like to see how you can help international chess for our league, go for this position.

  • Act as contact between the WCU International Director and WWCL, passing on and acquiring information about international chess e.g. Olympics, playing abroad etc

Delegate to the Welsh Ladies Chess Association of the WCU

Again, another chance to investigate the WCU and how it runs. This time, you can make a difference in Welsh Ladies Chess, helping bring any ideas that the WCU have to the WWCL.

  • Act as contact between WWCL and the WCU of director of women’s chess about female chess in Wales and how it can be promoted.

Funding

Grants and funding are an essential component of chess, with the league looking to provide funding for both its own projects and those of local clubs. If you have a good sales tongue and know how to type, take this role on to send the forms and emails out and locate sources of income.

  • Communicating with clubs to provide aid with projects
  • Look for grants and funding for projects
  • Look for sponsors for the league
